Operating Your In|Sync Adaptive Traffic Control System

Once deployed, operating In|Sync is simple and maintenance is minimal — averaging one hour of maintenance per month per intersection. Once In|Sync is adapting traffic to actual demand, there is little ongoing configuration or alteration work needed unless there is a significant or permanent change in traffic. With your improved traffic control plan, it is common that motorist behaviors evolve with the introduction of better traffic — improved speeds and volume tend to increase as motorists become aware of and accustomed to new traffic patterns.

The In|Sync Operating Interface

In|Sync’s interface is an interactive, flexible, easy-to-use command center for monitoring and problem solving — all from the comfort of your desk. The In|Sync Web UI can be accessed from In|Traffic on your computer, tablet or mobile device to view any of the In|Sync adaptive signal control cameras in your system — all on one page. If issues arise, the interface allows you to troubleshoot intersections, reboot cameras or turn on emergency mode, without ever having to travel to the cabinet.

Manual Controls from Your Desk

Within In|Traffic, there are In|Sync manual controls that let you take over an intersection and control it directly. Beyond In|Sync’s adaptive signal control, you can force demand on a phase, manually call a phase or initiate a pedestrian push button call. In|Traffic also shows the status of cameras, and it can be set up to send notifications when issues arise at the intersection. Along with that, you can perform some remote configurations for advanced traffic management.

Change Local and Global Optimizer Settings

Both local and global optimization can be changed within the Configuration Management tool within In|Traffic. This can include choosing the permitted phasing and sequencing, such as leading or lagging left-turns, for the local optimization of In|Sync. For global optimization, the amount of green time dedicated to coordinated movements at intersections can be adjusted, depending on side street need. Furthermore, minimum light times, pedestrian phase information, green tunnel thresholds and demand-based coordinated tunnel movement can also be managed.

Monitoring Your Intersections 24/7

When it comes to advanced traffic management, monitoring intersections is one of the most important aspects of making sure your adaptive traffic control is fully optimized. From In|Traffic you can monitor every In|Sync camera at every intersection within a management group to make sure everything is running smoothly. In the Portal view, you can see a live feed of all In|Sync cameras, broken down by management group. From here, you can also record video to review traffic flow and patterns such as common complaints from drives during a certain time.

Failure Mitigation

In|Sync is designed with robust failure mitigation capabilities that allow it to control traffic even when the system experiences some form of failure — notifying staff by email or SMS. If communications are interrupted, In|Sync uses historical data to determine demand so that both the local and global optimization continues. Any hardware issues can be viewed from the In|Traffic and solved easily.

Reporting on Your Intersections

Accessed from In|Traffic, the In|Sync Web UI provides several summary-level reports that display total vehicle and pedestrian counts for each phase, along with period lengths, phase volume playback, split data and statistics so you can optimize your traffic control plan. A historical viewer is also accessible — a feature commonly used for troubleshooting — to show if any problems came up for both vehicles and pedestrians.

In|Traffic and In|Sync Web UI are customizable interfaces: you decide which cameras show up in different views so your interface best represents the needs of your department and intersections. Troubleshooting an intersection requires that technicians can easily and quickly diagnose issues, which is why both programs were designed to be interactive and easily accessible, part of true advanced traffic management.
