Differentiators

Adaptation

InSync systems are “real-time adaptive” as opposed to all other systems that are “responsive adaptive.” Responsive adaptive systems adjust signal times based on data collected over a given period of time (usually several minutes or cycles) while the real-time adaptive InSync system implements changes to signals based on real-time demand resulting in superior optimization of traffic flow.

Upfront Cost

The upfront cost of an InSync system is on average $35,000 less than other systems.  A typical InSync deployment carries the price of $25,000 – $30,000 per intersection as opposed to the average price of $65,000 per intersection for other adaptive traffic control systems.

Upgrade and Hidden Costs

Many other systems do not include all items necessary for operation in the upfront costs.  The most common of these items are detection devices, upgraded controllers, and communication ability.  InSync stands alone by including video detection in the initial cost and is capable of utilizing existing detection methods. InSync does not require upgrades to the controllers to use the system.

Installation Time Requirements

On average, other systems require 365 hours to install while InSync systems are installed at typical rate of 2-3 intersections per day per install crew.

Training Time Requirements

Rhythm Engineering provides installation training when InSync is deployed.  The session consists of classroom and field portions totaling two days.  Other systems average 41 hours of training time.

Maintenance Time Requirements

Other systems require on average 10 hours per week to maintain.  InSync, once installed and
operational, can be expected to require around 2 hours of maintenance per month.  Maintenance issues
are typically minor and include adjusting camera angle, zoom, and focus, as well as the occasional
detection zone adjustment.

Reliability

InSync is unique in its reliability by providing a backup failure mode.  In the event of detection failure, InSync can reference historical data and base traffic optimization on previous events that occurred at a similar time.  Other systems do not offer this protection against detection failure.

Turn-On Time

While other systems can require long periods of time between installation and operation (sometimes several months), InSync can be immediately operational once installed.

Signal Controller Compatibility

InSync will work with any signal controller on the market. Other systems work only with specific brands
of signals.

Dynamic Splits

While other controllers must rely on the standard ring and barrier structure as well as predetermined split times, InSync can place calls to phases in an optimal sequence and adjust the splits to an optimal length.

Down Time

While other systems experience down time ranging from 5% to 50%, InSync is operational 24/7.  Most down time in other systems is caused by detection and communications failures.

Client Approval

Approximately 45% of existing systems have been abandoned or shut down.  InSync systems are
still operational.

Ease of Installation

InSync is a true plug-and-play system that utilizes existing controller hardware and central system software.  Existing agency-owned traffic signal hardware does not need to be discarded or upgraded for an InSync deployment.  Additionally, controller operations can be reverted to standard intersection control at will with the click of a button or by time-of-day.  Other adaptive traffic control systems require specialized hardware/software such as proprietary controllers and proprietary central system software.

Integrated Detection and Optimization Modules

InSync is the only adaptive traffic control system with integrated detection and optimization modules.  Unlike other adaptive traffic control systems, InSync does not require additional detection systems (such as inductive loops or video) to be deployed.  This results in savings of about $20,000 to $25,000 per intersection.  Also, this eliminates the need for field checking the integrity of the inductive loop detectors.  InSync detection zones can be drawn/configured very quickly. This helps to facilitate traffic control during construction activities.

Communications Infrastructure

InSync requires minimal bandwidth – below that of other systems. Contact Rhythm Engineering for specifics based on your existing infrastructure and your future InSync system.

Digital Architecture

InSync uses digital architecture versus analog architecture used by other adaptive traffic control systems.

No Need for Specialized Licensed Software

InSync is written with strict adherence to web- and Ethernet standards.  Unlike other adaptive traffic control systems, InSync can be configured and the video images monitored using a standard web browser without the need to purchase specialized licensed software.
